More than 1,000 people died in 1945 from deficiency diseases in the United States

The death toll was 1,071 from pellagra, rickets, beriberi, and scurvy. That was down from 1,204 deaths in 1944 and 1,537 deaths in 1943, according to the United States Vital Statistics.
