In nutrition history before 1885, nearly all of the studies had been carried out in Western Europe and most were concerned with the need for either protein or energy. These lines of work continued in the 1880s but in the next 25 y, and in many more parts of the world, important new lines of work were being developed that would, in the long run, greatly broaden our understanding of nutritional requirements.
