Lieber was a Belgian-born American researcher who pioneered alcohol research at a time when conventional wisdom thought alcohol was not toxic and that cirrhosis was caused by a faulty diet.Working mostly at the Veteran Administration’s Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, Lieber showed with baboons that ethanol was toxic to the liver despite an adequate diet. He also elucidated the biochemical pathway for metabolism of ethanol in the liver and showed that it promoted fatty acid synthesis and fatty liver disease.
