Roger J. Williams was an American biochemist who discovered the B-vitamin pantothenic acid and who directed the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas at Austin, where much early research on B vitamins was conducted.
In his later years, Williams became a hero of the orthomolecular medicine and libertarian communties for his writings on the biochemical differences between individuals. “An adequate single picture of the human body, or any of its major parts, cannot be drawn,” he wrote. Others used this to conclude that because every individual is unique, no general rules applicable to all can be justified. His older brother, Robert R. Williams, isolated vitamin B-1 (thiamine).
